BIOPSY POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

If you have any questions regarding any of this information, please ask your oral surgeon.

BLEEDING

A small amount of bleeding after surgery is to be expected. If active bleeding occurs, apply pressure with a moist gauze pad directly over the surgery site for 20-30 minutes. Pink or blood-tinged saliva is normal following the procedure.

SWELLING

Swelling is a normal occurrence after surgery. Swelling may reach its maximum 2-3 days following surgery. Apply ice, as needed, to the outside of the face over the surgical area 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off the first 24 hours.

DIET

You should drink plenty of fluids and eat soft foods on the day of surgery. Please be careful with hot foods and liquids while you are still numb. Stick with soft foods (i.e.- applesauce) the first day and progress as you can tolerate.

PAIN

You may want to start taking pain medication while you are still numb. For mild to moderate pain, OTC Motrin/Ibuprofen/Advil can be taken. For severe pain, the prescribed medication (if prescribed) should be taken as directed.

ORAL HYGIENE

Good oral hygiene helps with healing, you can start with a warm salt water rinse 24 hours after surgery twice a day until you can return to your normal brushing routine.

If your treatment requires a specimen sent to pathology, we would like to see you back for a follow-up appointment to discuss the results with the doctor. Biopsy results are typically available 7-10 days after surgery.
