Pre-Operative Instructions for Sedation / General Anesthesia

Please read all instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions may result in your procedure being rescheduled. If you have any questions, please call our office and follow the prompts to reach the doctor on call at (847) 381-0106.

1. Nothing by mouth (NPO)

Do NOT eat or drink anything for 6 hours prior to surgery unless specifically instructed by the oral surgeon. This includes food, liquids, and water.

2. Medications

If the patient takes daily medications, you must discuss this with the oral surgeon prior to surgery to determine if medications should be taken the day of surgery with a small sip of water.

3. Arrival time

You must arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled procedure time.

4. Escort requirements

  • All minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • All patients must have a responsible adult driver/escort present.
  • Escorts must remain in the reception area for the duration of the procedure.
  • Patients cannot be dropped off and picked up later.
  • We will not discharge patients to a taxi or rideshare.

5. Recovery access

Only one escort will be allowed in the recovery area following the procedure.

6. Post-operative supervision

A responsible adult must remain with the patient for 24 hours after surgery. Patients may not drive for 24 hours following sedation or anesthesia.

7. Alcohol and substances

Do not consume alcohol, smoke, or use recreational drugs for 24 hours before and after surgery.

8. Clothing

Wear a short-sleeve or loose-fitting top and closed-toe shoes.
No flip flops or loose sandals.

9. Personal items

  • No cell phones past the reception area
  • No photos or video recording allowed

10. Day of surgery restrictions

  • No nail polish
  • No contact lenses
  • Remove all oral piercings

11. Medical items

If you use an inhaler, bring it with you on the day of surgery.

12. Female patients

Antibiotics may reduce the effectiveness of birth control. Use alternative methods as needed.
